In line with my policy of no hidden surprises, I must point out that today's winery visit & tasting is far from private, and frankly commercial. However, I've decided to include the venue, because it's just unbeatable value for money. In fact we taste nine of Tuscany's most renowned wines while savoring a great Tuscan meal. The pairing of the wine and food is perfect, and a similar experience in a wine bar or restaurant would cost many times the price. If you're considering sending wine home, it's a great occasion to try a wide variety of Tuscan wines in a single sitting.
Please Note: I wish you to know I don't receive commission on wine sales; a purchase is not mandatory or implied. Obviously the winery offers the experience with a view to sales, but your decisions will not be questioned.
09:30am - We start our Tuscan wine tour and head for San Gimignano, a medieval town in a truly wonderful state of preservation and perhaps the most charming and picturesque of all Tuscan hill towns. We start our day in free time (about an hour and a half) with a walk up the main street which leads to the town piazza, with its wonderfully preserved medieval stone buildings. The town has an atmosphere all of its own which you are sure to enjoy. You may like to visit the museum which takes you up the highest tower which has been restored to its original state.
Late morning we arrive at the winery for brunch, and our tasting of some of Tuscany's most famous wines, including Chianti, Brunello and Vernaccia. As I mentioned earlier they make no secret of the fact they're trying to sell you wine, but they are "adorable rogues" and we always have a laugh, a great meal, and taste taste excellent wine. The satisfaction rate has been 100%. Every wine will be presented by the sommelier, then served with an accompanying dish. The portions are generous, and you'll need time to sample all nine wines. For this reason we'll we'll spend about two hours at the winery.
We continue our Tuscan tour as we move on to Siena, considered the second most beautiful town in Tuscany, with its red brick buildings, stupendous cathedral and of course, the world famous Piazza del Campo square. Siena is exceptional not only for its enchanting Gothic atmosphere, but also because it's a living city, were the town's folk of today go about their daily activities. This gives the visitor an insight into a contemporary Italian town, but with a change of clothing, you could easily believe to be living in the 16th century. We have free time i Siena of about an hour and a half.
Our Tuscan tour is completed and we leave Siena at about 04:30, returning to our accommodation around 05:30.
Tuscany Tour duration: approx eight hours door to door.
